How to Create and Manage Connections in SkillsDock
This guide shows you how to manage business connections in SkillsDock. You will learn who can send invitations, how to accept or reject incoming requests, and how to remove a connection when you no longer need it.
Before you start
- You are signed in to a Builder, Professional, or Subcontractor account.
- You are working with another business account, not a homeowner account.
- You understand that not every account type can start a new connection request.
The connection rules are simple:
- Builders can send requests to Professionals and Subcontractors.
- Professionals can send requests to Subcontractors.
- Subcontractors can receive and manage requests, but they cannot start a new one.
If you are signed in as a subcontractor, it is normal not to see a send button.
Step 1: Open the Connections page
- Log in to your SkillsDock dashboard.
- Open Connections from the main navigation.
Direct link: Builder | Subcontractor | Professional
Most accounts see the page split into tabs:
- Active for confirmed business relationships
- Received for incoming requests waiting on your response
- Sent for requests you have already sent
Subcontractor accounts only see Active and Received. That is expected because subcontractors cannot send new connection requests.
If you have pending incoming requests, SkillsDock shows a badge next to Received so they are easy to spot.
Step 2: Send a connection request
This step only applies to Builder and Professional accounts.
- Click Send Connection or Send Request in the top-right corner.
- In the search field, type at least two characters from the person's name or username.
- Select the correct user from the results list.
- Add a short message if you want to introduce yourself.
- Click Send Request.
Once the request is sent, SkillsDock shows a success message and the request appears in the Sent tab.
The optional message is helpful if the other business may not recognise your name straight away. A short note such as the job, site, or project name is usually enough.
If you search for someone and cannot send the request, the most common reason is that the relationship is not allowed by the account hierarchy. For example, a professional can connect to a subcontractor, but not upward to a builder.
Step 3: Accept or reject a received request
- Open the Received tab.
- Review the name, account type, username, and any message attached to the request.
- Click Accept to confirm the connection, or Reject if you do not want to proceed.
If you accept the request, the relationship moves into Active. If you reject it, the request drops out of your pending list and the two businesses are not connected.
Only the business that received the request can accept or reject it. The sender cannot complete that step for you.
Step 4: Cancel a request you already sent
If you sent a request by mistake or no longer need it:
- Open the Sent tab.
- Find the pending request.
- Click Cancel.
This removes the pending request before the other business accepts it.
If you are using a subcontractor account, you will not see a Sent tab because subcontractors cannot create outgoing requests.
Step 5: Remove an active connection
When two businesses are already connected, the relationship appears in Active.
To remove it:
- Open the Active tab.
- Find the business you want to remove.
- Click Disconnect or Remove, depending on your app.
- Confirm the action if your app asks for confirmation.
Either side of an active connection can remove it. Once removed, the businesses are no longer linked through the Connections page.
If you later need to work together again, you can send a fresh request.
What you should see when everything is working
A normal setup usually looks like this:
- Your current business relationships appear in Active
- Incoming requests appear in Received
- Builder and Professional accounts also see a Sent tab
- You see success messages such as Connection request sent, Connection accepted, or Connection removed
- The other business name, username, and account type are visible on each card
Troubleshooting
I cannot see Send Connection or Send Request
That is expected on subcontractor accounts. Subcontractors can receive, accept, reject, and remove connections, but they cannot start them.
I searched for someone and nothing came up
The search needs at least two characters. Try the person's name or username exactly as they use it in SkillsDock. If there are still no results, the account may not be active or may not be part of the supported connection flow.
My request will not send
SkillsDock blocks a new request when:
- You are trying to connect to yourself
- There is already an active connection between the two businesses
- There is already a pending request waiting for a response
- The target account type is not allowed by the connection rules
If an older request was rejected or removed, you can send a new one.
I accepted a request but do not see it in Active
Switch back to the Active tab and give the page a moment to refresh. If it still does not appear, reload the page and check again.
I removed a connection by mistake
Removing an active connection does not permanently block the other business. You can send a new request later if you need to reconnect.
